Creating a Classic Sandwich!

Greetings,

Today I want to share more about how meals work, specifically dinner, at the farm.

Twice a week, I cook dinner for the three of us. Today was BLA, Bacon, Lettuce, and Avacado. Because tomatoes are not in season, so I improvised and added avocado.

After I completed my track workout, I biked to the grocery store to get an avocado. When I went to the store, I found that not all of the avocados were ripe, so I got the one I thought was as ripe. Turns out when I sliced it this evening for dinner it was pretty firm still, but edible.

When someone is on cooking duty at littleGrasse, you are in charge of cooking dinner and cleaning. On the cooking side, one should include some type of protein, meat or vegetarian protein, something fresh from the farm, and or canned or fermented food.

In the root cellar, there were some carrots left over from last season and roasted them using my mom’s recipe. Thanks, Mom!! Using butter, salt, and peppers, the carrots roasted while I prepared the BLAs.

I used meat from 8 o’clock Ranch, a local butcher that we (the farm) have access to their products. As the bacon was cooking, I may have set off the smoke detector. When the alarm sounded, I went into full dorm fire alarm mode. Because I lived in a dorm where at least two alarms went off per month. This past school year, the alarm would scare me so badly that I would be scared awake. Thankfully there was no fire, maybe a tiny amount of smoke that was cleared out by opening a window.

Once the carrots were done dinner was ready to be served! I know it sounds like a simple meal but with trying to farm and train one can’t put a lot of complexities into meal prep. Simple is easy and I like easy.

Happy Trails!
